Trix Before the Silly Rabbit

One look at this vintage ad from 1956 and it appears as though children weren’t finding Trix cereal as exciting as they should.

The copy states “When a woman’s five, she needs love”. Well General Mills’ rep Joe Harris thought a silly rabbit might be a suitable alternative.

The Trix Rabbit was introduced in 1957 as a fruity cereal fiend who was often denied his fix. Children mocked him with the catch-phrase: “Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids”.

Don’t worry, he eventually wrapped his lips around the lemony-yellow, organgy-orange, grapety-purple, raspberry red, and lime green goodness in 1976 and once again in 1980. The moment was immortalized in this classic commercial.
