I left my heart in Quito
August 14, 2013

About this time last year, I had just returned home from one of the best location shoots I had ever been a part of. We were high up in the Andes mountains with Rick Campanelli and his then-fiancee Angie Smith.

Our job was to shoot some segments for Entertainment Tonight about Rick visiting different humanitarian projects funded by Canadians. Those kinds of projects are always rewarding but what made this one extra special was the people involved. From the cast and crew to the Ecuadorian people, everything was just perfect. What a great memory.

Here are some of my favorite videos from the trip:

Zombies on the brain. Origin Story
January 16, 2012

Finally, we learn of how the zombie plague was unleashed. According to footage found near the lifeless corpses of two boneheaded Canadian tourists, an ancient curse was unleashed onto the world… or something like that.

Zombies on the brain. Shawn’s Zombie Ball
November 8, 2011

Director Shawn Dell kills some time playing a little game called ‘Zombie ball’. It’s kinda like baseball, only it’s twisted and demented.

Zombies on the brain. Day four-play
November 5, 2011

We took our time on day four but it will pay off in the final cut of the film.

Legend has it director Stanley Kubrick was such a perfectionist that he would sometimes force his actors to perform in up to 50 takes for a single shot. Shawn took a page right out of Kubrick’s book of obsession, or so Gabriel may have thought after shooting the soon-to-be-famous baseball pitch scene over and over and over and over again.

We lost track of how many pitches Shawn made Gabriel throw. Man, that scene is going to look awesome.

What’s not going to look awesome is Tim’s epileptic zombie dance. Somehow, he always popped up at the front of the pack of zombie extras and made sure to distract most scenes with his jitterbugging jimmy-legs. As producer, he should fire himself as an extra.

Here are some more pics from day four.

Zombies on the brain. Three day
November 4, 2011

For all of the challenges we’ve faced in the process of making this low-budget short, we’re getting some great footage.

On day three we shot the intro scene that sets up the entire story. This scene relies heavily on the script and acting. I’m happy to report that the acting is awesome.

I can’t overstate how grateful we are for the cast that chose to share their talent with us. Their performances are raising this movie to a whole new level.

Check out some more stills from the day three shoot:

Zombies on the brain. Off and running
October 23, 2011

Ummm… we’re off and runnin’.

Our first day of shooting taught us that:
– Adam is a pretty decent effect make-up artist
– Gabriel can do his own stunts really well.
– Garrett has a thing for baseball bats.
– Tabitha can take a beating with a baseball bat.
– Tony makes a hunky zombie.
– Toronto Zombie Walk complicates the shooting of zombie movies.
– We can’t tell how much of the blood on Gabriel is real.
